love tower defense games but.. too difficult in first level

These games are supposed to start of simple, then grow in complexity and become ever more challenging as I get better, but this game, as cute as it is, was so hard right away, I gave up after a frustrated first hour. I feel like I’m missing something really obvious about the way the game is supposed to be played, but I was earning resources so slowly, that I couldn’t get enough to pay for a second turret before I was overrun.

I can’t understand why this is so popular. My recommendation is to buy another game and skip this one..
